New Patent-Pending System for Product Authentication

DataTraceDNA has lodged a patent application for a new automated method of product authentication that will enable confirmation of the integrity of both natural and man-made items. The system operates on the detection of characteristic spectral responses and/or the presence of contaminants. The patent-pending system will facilitate and extend DataTraceDNA’s offering of services to organisations that need, or wish, to have strong scientific proof of the origin of an item or product.

DataDot Technology Limited (ASX: DDT) is pleased to announce that its joint venture company, DataTraceDNA Pty. Limited (DataTraceDNA), has lodged a patent application in the USA, to be followed in other selected countries, for a new method of determining the integrity and provenance of a wide variety of natural and/or man-made materials, effectively in real time.

This new intellectual property takes DataTraceDNA into a new realm of authentication solutions. It will enable the company to offer a range of new services to industry where there are concerns about quality, purity and integrity of materials. Examples include food (farmed or produced), manufactured goods, security documents and pharmaceutical industries.

The new DataTraceDNA system will appeal to industries and companies concerned with the quality of their products, who wish to be certain they can unequivocally prove the purity, quality and provenance of products.

The new technology will also allow companies charged with whole-of-life maintenance of materials to authenticate and vet their input waste streams. This capability will ensure that companies do not inherit liability for the safe disposal of competitor or generic products or materials.

DataTraceDNA is a 50/50 joint venture between DDT and the CSIRO. Ben Bootle, Chief Executive Officer of DataTraceDNA, said “DataTraceDNA is applying its very considerable experience, gained over the past five years, to develop exciting new technologies that solve some of the most important product quality challenges facing the global economy. I expect our new system will be operational in the second half of calendar 2010 and generating revenue in the 2010/11 financial year.” The market for authentication and quality control solutions is growing rapidly in line with growth in global trade and the ever-increasing need to validate the origin, composition and quality of natural and man-made products.
